_Hi all, great job being so active here!
This week, it's time to get real.
You want to save the world, you want to end the death penalty... You have big ideas, which is excellent, but now is the time to focus in on the POSSIBLE.

This week, we would like you to really lay out your tangible goals for the project and some potential, realistic strategies for accomplishing them.
Pick your "do-able" idea.
and do it.
Also: please don't forget to include your name and email! If you are already working with someone, note it in your post!

I am looking at gang aesthetics. Looking to chisel parts of my paper that I have been working on for awhile. Defintley will be spending a lot of time with professors, graduate students to work on my paper.

I think others might be interested in what you mean by gang aesthetics. Can you explain a bit more.

When I refer to gang aesthetics, I am looking at how tattoos, certain dress style, class, race affect the ways in which police discriminate/interact with Latino "gang associated" youth.

Right now, I am focusing my energy on finding people (in and out of the UCSB sphere) and manners in which I can carry out my primary research on the relationship of undocumented students in the academic system. Please let me know if anyone has any contacts or advice!

In terms of primary research, I am going to work this weekend on scheduling an interview for early next week with someone from IDEAS on campus. Also, I am going to call an NGO I found called NASSP and request to speak with one or more members of their department specific staff members on the issue.

I am looking to investigate what our government does to help veteran soldiers who have returned from the recent Iraq and Afghanistan wars. I plan to focus my efforts on those suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This is a type of anxiety disorder that can haunt these veterans and have a negative effect on their daily lifetsyle habits and rituals. If anyone knows of any war veterans, feel free to shoot me their contact information. All information is helpful at this point. Please let me know.

I have narrowed my focus towards the litigation process of police brutality. The end results seem to end in lenient sentences or dropped charges for the suspects. I hope to discover more about police brutality through law enforcement policies and access records of cases

Are there local records you can access? What kind? Court records may be public. What cases?

My topic is on police brutality and how different environments impact the relationship of law enforcement and civilians.I will be interviewing a victim of police brutality who is currently awaiting incarceration. This is to get a perspective from multiple angles. As for the litigation process, I am still finding specific public documents. Pat, from photojournalism, is also collaborating with me on police brutality.

This week, I have narrowed down my topic. I have found quite an amount of data and research supporting my argument that Death Penalty is heavily biased against blacks and minorities.

Hi Ching -

I know there's a ton of animal shelters around Santa Barbara. I would consider walking into one of them and seeing if they have any past experiences with animals that have been neglected after animal testing and ended up in shelters. Also, Veterinary hospitals may have additional information on the detrimental effects of chemical products that owner's use on their pets and are not even aware of the contents of the product being used. (Dogs reacting negatively to shampoos or anything else). I know it's not directly related to animal testing but I does prove the serious and life-threatening effects that "blind testing" can have on animals.

Are there local animal activists groups that are knowledgeable about this topic. Can you get in contact with others via email, even if they are not in Santa Barbara? If this topic proves too problematic, what is another idea. Decide soon.

I am researching what professionals such as police officials and mental health providers think the mentally ill who commit crimes should be referred to. Jail or mental health programs?

My research question is "should the professional auditors of the multi billion dollar Maddoff ponzi scheme be liable for approving misleading financial reports and fraudulent transaction?"

As of last thursday I have been in the process of interviewing Douglas Kulper, a professor at UCSB, who owned his own law firm and also does extensive honors research on the subject matter. Next Monday I will be interviewing Evan Castanarous, who intially worked for a Big Four Accounting Firm, Deliotte&Tousche, and is now a top employee at Raytheon in Santa Barbara. I would like to Evan the ignorance that some if not most employees are subject to and what their roles as "auditors" truly are.

I am researching how gender plays into female soldiers experience in the military. I just finished reading a "I Love My Rifle More Than You", a memoir written by a female Arabic linguist who served in Iraq. This provided me with personal insight into daily life for a woman soldier, combating stereotypical gender roles within a war atmosphere. My next step is to interview women who are currently/have served time in the military. Again any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

For my research my main focus this week is to get in contact with possible individuals I can research like Goleta cops, professors and possibly a criminal lawyer. I am also going to try and get more information on a specific case that I was going to use to support my research.

I am trying to determine whether my topic is a suitable "justice" issue. I want to focus on the effect of American media on identity formation of international youth, but is this topic necessarily a bad thing? Our generation is apart of a interconnected public sphere with each of us influencing one other- it just seems weird when the US has a majority of that influence.

My topic is about whether programs such as Assertive Community Treatment and Crisis Intervention Teams help keep the mentally ill out of jail. The first person I am going to interview is the Legislative Chair on the NAMI Southern Santa Barbara County Board. NAMI stands for National Alliance on Mental Illness. He has had a connection to these programs through a child and now because of that leads classes for other parents of the mentally ill.

I have asked my parents to contact him and require about 45 minutes to an hour and have a select group of questions to ask him about his life before fighting in the war and how it is changed now that she has come back home. However, I have not set up any other interviews. Thus, if anyone else can help me out in any way, all information is helpful at this point. Please feel free to shoot me an E-mail.

I will be looking at gender dynamics and how they affect one's experience within the United States military. I plan on interviewing a female family friend who previously served in the military. I hope this will allow me to gain primary research on how being a woman in the military may affect one's experience within the institution. Also if anyone has any other contacts that would be interested in being interviewed I would really appreciate it!
