I have an interview with Jacob Medinas mom and an OG Krazie from Santa Barbara this upcoming week. I am going to bring jacob medians story to life. for my other project I will be showing how society has scarred the young people I have worked with and what tattoos really mean to these youth. I am looking at gang aesthetics.

One of my students is interested in this topic too...can you make contact with her. Even if you don't join forces, it would be good to "talk over the fence"...and certainly your work might be paired together on the magazine or in the exhibit. You didn't leave your email address here.

The direction of my project has changed, once again.
I now want to focus on photo documenting privileges that different privileged groups enjoy. a privilege is an unearned, societally reinforced advantage over other groups. privileges cannot be transfered or denied, even if the person doesn't want them.

The idea of privilege originates from Peggy McIntosh's "White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack".

I will be drawing from these privilege lists found here: http://www.amptoons.com/blog/2006/09/26/a-list-of-privilege-lists/

and creating images to represent the privileges. I'm thinking of separating them out according to privilege (eg white privilege, straight privilege, etc), and writing out the privilege that is depicted underneath each photo. I think currently they'll be gridded out, but this will depend on how many images I'm able to generate from each privilege list.

I have interviewed and photographed my first subject. I met her at KUFF. I got a clip light and daylight bulb that I could bring to her house so the lighting would be more harsh. I have dates set with every other girl in KUFF who was interested in participating.

Now, I am getting into contact with the director of the "Vagina Monologues" to see if she or any of the cast would be interested in participating in my work.

Again, my project is about the taboo effect of expressing female sexuality and what it means to be "ladylike".

This week, I went to meet up with Kevin Liao from Writing 109 SS and exchanged our ideas about the collaboration project. We titled our project, "Brutality," which has the strong sense of justice in it. Kevin and I also discussed about finding our primary sources which include the victims of the officer misconduct. At the same time, I am working on how I would portrait and capture the image that will represent the topic. Lastly, another student from Writing 107J name Mariana Prestigiacomo has contacted me and offer for all three of us to collaborate together. Kevin and I look forward to see Mariana.

We will see how it goes this Monday when we meet.

I have interviewed some staffs from DAWG and asked to document an adoption happen. So, I'm waiting for them to contact me if there's any adoption happening. Also, I will try to visit the county animal shelter and some clinics around this area. I am also researching on policy and money sources for abandoned dogs.

My project is on low income single parent households and how children differ emotionally from their counterparts. I have been in contact with my aunt who used to work for Department of Social Services and she has said that going on a ride along with a social worker is 99% impossible because of the confidentiality issues. I am banking on that 1% to get me a yes but she has given me some people in high places to call in the department and I am also in touch with one of her friends who is a teacher and works with low income single parent household kids and troubled youth and she is going to see how she can help me with my project. On the other hand I am not sure what my project can change or how much of an impact it could have besides merely documentation. I just know that I feel strongly for people in the situation. Hopefully something will change when I really start getting more interaction instead of research.

Note that some of the social science students are working on issues related to family life...and/or services for at-risk youth. Maybe you could modify what you are doing to orient with them, although I like your idea. It's week 5, however, and I think everyone is confronting: What can I get done by the end of the quarter?

I am collaborating with Lesly Chan from writing 107 and Melissa from ArtSt120. We met with professor Appelbaum last week and he was very friendly and helpful. RIght now my main goals are to find a connection to someone in the garment industry that we can interview/make it down to LA as soon as possible to try and finagle my way into a garment factory or walk the streets outside trying to meet people who work in the factories who are willing to talk to me.

On another note- I just found out about a really cool program that goes to prisons around california and has weekend workshops where volunteers go into the prisons for the whole weekend and held teach the inmates alternatives to violence. I found out about it through another volunteer I met at the breakfasts for the homeless I have been going to. Sounds like a very eye opening experience but if they don't have another workshop very soon, unfortunately, I guess it will have to be another project to continue after this quarter.

Is Leslie's connection working out for you with the garment industry?

On another note, several of my students are pursuing stories about how some mentally ill people, which might include some of the homeless population, are being helped by community organizations. Your experience as a volunteer might be helpful to them. Here they are:

I feel like I'm finally starting to make some real progress on my project this week.

Last Friday my collaborator, Carly, and I tried visiting crisis pregnancy centers for the first time but didn't have much luck. We visited Villa Majella in downtown Santa Barbara only to find out it has closed. It was still interesting though, to see that it was located in the middle of a neighborhood and we briefly talked with the man who now owns the house and who has been hearing weird things about what was there before he bought it.

Today, we had more luck visiting Network Pharmacy Care Center, a pregnancy crisis center where we got to interview and photograph a nurse. We will also be going back there next Wednesday to interview a counselor.

We also found about an event this Saturday, from the care center, called The Great Turnaround. It is talk by Dr. Bruce Wilkinson, a speaker, author, and religious leader, about abortion at the Arlington Theater. We are both going to attend and are in the process of trying to get press passes for the event.

We are also in the process of contacting local hospitals and student health for more interviews.

Sounds like you have some ideas going! So Wilkinson is pro-life, right? I see that Life Network, which has been very active in Santa Barbara, is publicizing the event. You should definitely try to talk to them. Their website is instructive...3 women founders...are they still around to give you an historic perspective. I was particularly struck by this line on their page:

http://www.friendsoflifenetwork.org/who_we_are.html

We do not, under any circumstances, show women shocking photos of mutilated fetuses, induce guilt, or use any negative tactics to influence a women's choice. We do not benefit financially from any decision.

This is a departure from some of the protesters who sometimes picket Planned Parenthood.

My topic of interest is animal rights & injustice in the farming/ranching industries. My exact ideas have been changing often due to the difficulty of gaining access to this kind of thing. I have been writing back and forth with Tessa Tapscott from one of the WRIT classes. We have both contacted large businesses without receiving very helpful feedback. I am going to contact local rescue shelters and the police department to see if we will be able to get some insight into animal abuse. I hope to be making some serious progress & producing images within the next week.

As Sazsa mentioned earlier, we are both collaborating with Lesly Chan from Cissy's writing class. We met with professor Appelbaum last week and he gave us helpful tips and connections for contacting people involved with the LA garment industry. Lesly attended a USAS (United Students Against Sweatshops) meeting last Wednesday, and I will be attending one tomorrow. USAS are trying to get the UCen Bookstore to purchase their college gear from Alta Gracia, which is the only manufacturer in the world that pays its employees a living wage. The UCSB Bookstore currently (and most college campuses) sell primarily Wideworld clothing (Russell Athletics, who are supplied by Wideworld as well).

Lesly also mentioned that the Human Rights group on campus are talking about having a mock sweatshop during human rights week (during week 8), so this might be exciting to take pictures of. I want to talk to USAS more about this tomorrow during their meeting.

Well I've yet to get responses and have been trying to reach out to other organizations (green peace) that deal with the ocean and environmental justice with out any luck. Clean Seas was my top choice and later this week I'm just going to have to go to their office and talk to them in person to get an answer. I would want my project to take a unique approach. I've been seriously re-considering my idea. The email Richard sent out about the tattoo's shops and the gang suppression task force using tat's as a marker of gang affiliation interested me. I've been gathering shops emails and numbers as my plan B, hoping to get in contact with them, talking to the artists and hopefully some of the kids. However after reading the posts I feel that Amy's project may to similar, or perhaps not. What do you think?

If you are interested in the ocean, the Coastal Fund on campus is very involved...and has contacts to many others: IV Surfrider, Calpirg, Environmental Affairs Board, the Office of the AS President, Say No to Styro, the Bren School of Environmental Science and Management, Art from Scrap, The Community Environmental Council, SB Channelkeeper, UCSB Reads and the Plastic Pollution Coalition. In addition, UCSB Reads is doing a whole campaign related to Moby Duck and awareness of plastic pollution. Don't just send emails and expect them to embrace your project. Yes, go talk to people in person.

Here is a roundup of ideas from my social science writing class...more to come from journalism students next week. They could bring some textual content to your visual imagery. Even if their research question doesn't match your interests, you might have a picture in your past collections that would work for them....or you might be interested in doing something not so documentarian but more illustrative? You can leave a message on the social science writing blog...or contact me for their email addresses.

My original idea is that I am exploring the discrimination of same-sex relationships and gender identity. My goal is to have a compilation of intimate portraits and narratives/experiences of certain people. I also plan to document areas where hate crimes related to the LGBTQ community have occured.

I'm kind of stuck as to where to go with my project at the current moment. I found out I won't be able to attend QSU meetings because they are always during one of my classes. I have contacted someone involved with Queer Commission on campus (through AS) so hopefully that gives me a different starting point and I will be shooting the first footage of a hate crime location this weekend.
Since no one else in other classes seems to have a topic related to mine, I will have to find different ways to collaborate. Once again, if anyone has any suggestions or knows anyone that would like to participate (portrait/quote) that would be greatly appreciated (Identities can be kept completely anonymous).
