This week we want to see progress! How have you moved from the idea phase to the doing phase, writing phase, research phase, shooting phase... What steps have you taken and what progress have you made? What are your next steps?

I have an interview with Jacob Medinas mom and an OG Krazie from Santa Barbara this upcoming week. I am going to bring jacob medians story to life. for my other project I will be showing how society has scarred the young people I have worked with and what tattoos really mean to these youth. I am looking at gang aesthetics.

One of my students is interested in this topic too...can you make contact with her. Even if you don't join forces, it would be good to "talk over the fence"...and certainly your work might be paired together on the magazine or in the exhibit. You didn't leave your email address here.

I have interviewed and photographed my first subject. I met her at KUFF. I got a clip light and daylight bulb that I could bring to her house so the lighting would be more harsh. I have dates set with every other girl in KUFF who was interested in participating.

My friend is participating in Vagina Monologues this year. Her name is Sophie Hassett and her number is: 510.557.9493. You might want to find her on Facebook first but I'm sure she would love to help you out with your topic!!

This week, I went to meet up with Kevin Liao from Writing 109 SS and exchanged our ideas about the collaboration project. We titled our project, "Brutality," which has the strong sense of justice in it. Kevin and I also discussed about finding our primary sources which include the victims of the officer misconduct. At the same time, I am working on how I would portrait and capture the image that will represent the topic. Lastly, another student from Writing 107J name Mariana Prestigiacomo has contacted me and offer for all three of us to collaborate together. Kevin and I look forward to see Mariana.

I have interviewed some staffs from DAWG and asked to document an adoption happen. So, I'm waiting for them to contact me if there's any adoption happening. Also, I will try to visit the county animal shelter and some clinics around this area. I am also researching on policy and money sources for abandoned dogs.

Note that some of the social science students are working on issues related to family life...and/or services for at-risk youth. Maybe you could modify what you are doing to orient with them, although I like your idea. It's week 5, however, and I think everyone is confronting: What can I get done by the end of the quarter?

I am collaborating with Lesly Chan from writing 107 and Melissa from ArtSt120. We met with professor Appelbaum last week and he was very friendly and helpful. RIght now my main goals are to find a connection to someone in the garment industry that we can interview/make it down to LA as soon as possible to try and finagle my way into a garment factory or walk the streets outside trying to meet people who work in the factories who are willing to talk to me.

Sounds like you have some ideas going! So Wilkinson is pro-life, right? I see that Life Network, which has been very active in Santa Barbara, is publicizing the event. You should definitely try to talk to them. Their website is instructive...3 women founders...are they still around to give you an historic perspective. I was particularly struck by this line on their page: 2/7/2012 02:17:46 pm
My topic of interest is animal rights & injustice in the farming/ranching industries. My exact ideas have been changing often due to the difficulty of gaining access to this kind of thing. I have been writing back and forth with Tessa Tapscott from one of the WRIT classes. We have both contacted large businesses without receiving very helpful feedback. I am going to contact local rescue shelters and the police department to see if we will be able to get some insight into animal abuse. I hope to be making some serious progress & producing images within the next week.

As Sazsa mentioned earlier, we are both collaborating with Lesly Chan from Cissy's writing class. We met with professor Appelbaum last week and he gave us helpful tips and connections for contacting people involved with the LA garment industry. Lesly attended a USAS (United Students Against Sweatshops) meeting last Wednesday, and I will be attending one tomorrow. USAS are trying to get the UCen Bookstore to purchase their college gear from Alta Gracia, which is the only manufacturer in the world that pays its employees a living wage. The UCSB Bookstore currently (and most college campuses) sell primarily Wideworld clothing (Russell Athletics, who are supplied by Wideworld as well).

Well I've yet to get responses and have been trying to reach out to other organizations (green peace) that deal with the ocean and environmental justice with out any luck. Clean Seas was my top choice and later this week I'm just going to have to go to their office and talk to them in person to get an answer. I would want my project to take a unique approach. I've been seriously re-considering my idea. The email Richard sent out about the tattoo's shops and the gang suppression task force using tat's as a marker of gang affiliation interested me. I've been gathering shops emails and numbers as my plan B, hoping to get in contact with them, talking to the artists and hopefully some of the kids. However after reading the posts I feel that Amy's project may to similar, or perhaps not. What do you think?

If you are interested in the ocean, the Coastal Fund on campus is very involved...and has contacts to many others: IV Surfrider, Calpirg, Environmental Affairs Board, the Office of the AS President, Say No to Styro, the Bren School of Environmental Science and Management, Art from Scrap, The Community Environmental Council, SB Channelkeeper, UCSB Reads and the Plastic Pollution Coalition. In addition, UCSB Reads is doing a whole campaign related to Moby Duck and awareness of plastic pollution. Don't just send emails and expect them to embrace your project. Yes, go talk to people in person.

Here is a roundup of ideas from my social science writing class...more to come from journalism students next week. They could bring some textual content to your visual imagery. Even if their research question doesn't match your interests, you might have a picture in your past collections that would work for them....or you might be interested in doing something not so documentarian but more illustrative? You can leave a message on the social science writing blog...or contact me for their email addresses. 2/8/2012 03:11:56 pm
My original idea is that I am exploring the discrimination of same-sex relationships and gender identity. My goal is to have a compilation of intimate portraits and narratives/experiences of certain people. I also plan to document areas where hate crimes related to the LGBTQ community have occured. 7/3/2012 03:44:13 pm
